Berlin, Feb 12 (UNI) NATO will extend the term of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg again until the spring of 2024, so that he can chair the summit marking NATO's 75th anniversary, which will be held in Washington next April, German newspaper Welt am Sonntag reported on Sunday, citing diplomatic sources.
The reason for the planned term extension, which ends on September 30, is that Stoltenberg provides "outstanding services to NATO," especially against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine, the sources said.
In addition, Stoltenberg serving as NATO's secretary general "guarantees stability at the top of the alliance in difficult times," the report said.
The sources added that after leaving office, Stoltenberg has a good chance of becoming president of the World Bank. The term of the current bank's head, David Malpass, ends in April 2024.
Meanwhile, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said, as quoted by German news agency dpa, that Stoltenberg does not seek another extension of his mandate.
"He has no intention of seeking an extension of the mandate," Lungescu was quoted as saying.
Stoltenberg has led NATO since 2014, with his term repeatedly extended.
